Iraq's supreme court on Monday ordered the suspension of a September 25 referendum on the independence of Iraqi Kurdistan , to examine whether such a poll would be constitutional. One key US ally - Israel - supports Kurdish independence in Iraq. But Wednesday's warning was the strongest to date from the USA, reflecting growing concerns that the vote could imperil hard-fought progress in the country where the US has been fighting since 2003. The border with Syria has been tense since the war erupted in 2011, and Israel has carried out over 100 strikes against Hezbollah weapons convoys in Syrian territory over the past five years. In 2016 , Israel shot two Patriot missiles at a drone entering its airspace, but both missiles failed. Hurricane watches were issued Saturday night for St. Martin, Antigua, St. Kitts, Nevis, Barbuda, Montserrat, Guadeloupe, Saba, St. Eustatius, and Anguilla. As of Sunday evening, the category 1 hurricane was heading north and west. Tropical Storm Maria formed on Saturday in the western Atlantic Ocean and is expected to be a hurricane by late Monday and a major hurricane by Wednesday , CNN quoted the US-based National Hurricane Centre as saying.
