Hundreds in Gaza protest electricity cuts

Just a month ago past year, President Trump infuriated Muslims all over the Middle East led by the Palestinians when he announced that the United States government would move their embassy from Tel Aviv to the newly proposed capital of Jerusalem.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki HaleyNimrata (Nikki) HaleyHaley: "Open question" if USA athletes will attend Olympics amid North Korea tensions Haley: Trump isn't deciding who controls east Jerusalem Emergency UN Security Council meeting called after Trump's Jerusalem announcement: report MORE suggested this week that the U.S. could cut funding for the Palestinians unless they agreed to return to the negotiating table with Israel.

On Sunday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced that the Central Council would soon convene an emergency meeting to discuss "crucial issues" related to Jerusalem.

"UNRWA is an organisation that perpetuates the problem of the Palestinian refugees", he said. A Gaza economist said restoration of power from Israel, the enclave's main electricity supplier, could raise that figure to six hours.

The two groups are also at odds over the role of Iran and the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah in the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. "One is to declare the death of the so-called peace process and the other is to end all types of normalization with the Zionist enemy", said the Hamas leader.

Coveney invites Abbas to Ireland during visit to West Bank
Past attempts by Israeli authorities to evacuate Havat Gilad have led to clashes with settlers there. Overall, the PA's payments to terrorists and their families now total about $300 million annually.

In a vote overnight between Monday and Tuesday, Israel's parliament passed an amendment that will make it more hard for the government to cede parts of East Jerusalem in any future peace deal with the Palestinians.

The Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of their future independent state, while Israel wants an integral Jerusalem to be its eternal capital.

Palestinians have been clashing with Israeli forces in the West Bank and along the Gaza border in weekly protests over the decision.

On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump tweeted he was considering halting payments to the PA.

Meanwhile, Palestinians are expecting the response of Hamas and Islamic Jihad movements to the invitation of the Palestinian Central Council to take part in its upcoming convention next week.
