Ecuador gives nationality to Wikileaks' Assange

"Ecuador knows that the way to resolve this issue is for Julian Assange to leave the embassy to face justice", the spokesperson was quoted as saying by The Guardian newspaper.

It's foreign minister said she was seeking a "dignified" solution to his situation with Britain, who earlier refused a request by Ecuador to give him diplomatic status.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, whohas been hiding in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for more than five years, has been given an identity number in the South American country, its civil register showed Wednesday.

Assange received diplomatic asylum from Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa in mid-2012 on the grounds that his life would be in danger if Assange was extradited to the United States to face charges for leaking classified information.

The reaction of the MFA comes one day after Quito reportedly granted an ID card to Assange.

Later, the WikiLeaks founder tweeted an image of himself wearing Ecuador's national football team shirt.

"No solution will be achieved without worldwide cooperation and the cooperation of the United Kingdom, which has also shown interest in seeking a way out", said Espinosa.

But a year ago, the Australian, 46, angered Ecuadorian president Lenin Moreno by tweeting support for Catalan separatists.

Mr Assange has been in the small embassy in Knightsbridge ever since.

August 13, 2015: Swedish prosecutors drop some of the allegations against Julian Assange.

In London, police say they are "obliged" to arrest Assange if he leaves the embassy, for breaching the terms of his bail in 2012. The Ecuadorian government has granted him political asylum.

While the grant of a passport has not been officially confirmed, it is seen as part of a process to get Assange out of the United Kingdom by giving him a role at the embassy that confers diplomatic immunity.

Any mediated deal between Ecuador and the United Kingdom would likely have to address Mr Assange's concerns.

There is no evidence at this point that US authorities have filed any charges against him, including secret charges, but CIA Director Mike Pompeo previous year called WikiLeaks a "hostile intelligence service".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said last April that Assange's arrest remains "a priority", adding, "Whenever a case can be made, we will seek to put some people in jail".

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, responding to a reporter's question in April about whether arresting Assange was a priority, said it was. According to Assange's edition, a passport could also have been issued.
