Lalu sentenced to 3.5 years Jail in fodder scam

Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad on Saturday was sentenced to three-and-a-half years jail in a fodder scam case by the Special CBI court in Ranchi. Judge Shivpal Singh pronounced the quantum of sentence via video conferencing.

The counsel said failure to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh each under the IPC and the PCA would entail another six months in jail for the RJD leader. Lalu could have got bail if he is sentenced to less than three years in prison. His son Tejashwi Yadav said that they will approach the high court and also apply for bail after studying the sentence.

The CBI lawyer said a fine totalling Rs 10 lakhs was imposed the RJD supremo.

Lalu Yadav on Friday had filed a plea seeking minimum punishment for himself citing his poor health condition.

Lalu Prasad is at present cooling his heels in Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi. "I am sure our Chief Laluji will attend RJD's crucial meeting tomorrow" says Bihar party chief Ramchandra Purve. The court also slapped Rs 5 lakh fine on each.

This is the second fodder scam case in which Prasad has been jailed.

He was convicted by the special court on Dec 23.

The court sentenced all 16 convicts in the case, from seven years to three-and-a-half years.

There were 34 accused, out of which 11 died during the trial while one turned CBI approver and admitted to the crime.
