Novak Djokovic explains his plans ahead of Australian Open

Serena Williams withdraws from Australian Open

Serena Williams won't be defending her Australian Open title after the American withdrew from the first grand slam of the 2018 season, saying she needs "more time" after giving birth a year ago.

Williams past year beat older sister Venus in the final before revealing she played the tournament despite being more than two months pregnant. This was her 23rd Grand Slam singles title, surpassing Steffi Graf's Open Era record of 22.

"The memory of last year's Open is one that I will carry with me, and Olympia and I look forward to coming back again", added Williams. She lost to French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko last week.

DJs React to Pres. Trump's Nuclear Button Tweet
Her statement comes after Trump took to Twitter Tuesday to respond to Kim's claim that he possesses a nuclear button on his desk. He said there can be little doubt that worldwide pressure, including sanctions ordered by the U.N.

In a statement put out by Australian Open organizers, Williams said: "After competing in Abu Dhabi I realized that although I am super close, I'm not where I personally want to be". Back in December, Craig Tiley said that it was "very likely" that Williams would be back to defend her Australian Open title, saying that "There is no question that she'll be ready" in the view of Tennis Australia. On January 4, the tennis champ shared her decision to withdraw from the 2018 Australian Open, and offered a heartfelt explanation as to why.

The 12-time Grand Slam victor had a forgetful 2017 season.

Williams announced on Friday that she would not be defending her title in Melbourne after realising she wasn't up to speed physically in an exhibition encounter in Abu Dhabi last week. The 36-year-old went on to win the tournament, defeating her sister in the final, before taking the remainder of the year off. There is no word yet on when she will be, but Miami in March may be a good bet.
