Cancer Death Rates Fall: Here's Why

NBC file

From 1991 to 2015 there was a continuous decrease of 26% in the combined cancer death rate, resulting in about 2,378,600 fewer cancer deaths than would have been expected if death rates had stayed at their peak.

On the heels of awareness campaigns and a push to encourage Americans to get more frequent colonoscopies and check ups, death rates for colorectal and prostate cancers are less than half of what they were in 1993, helping to cap overall mortality. Among black Americans, cancer mortality is 14 percent higher than it is among whites.

"A decline in consumption of cigarettes is credited with being the most important factor in the drop in cancer death rates", said Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society. As tobacco use is the major cause of death almost 3 in 10 for the people diagnosed with cancer.

Cancer deaths have fallen yet again, thanks mostly to huge declines in smoking, the American Cancer Society said Thursday.

The report estimates about 1.7 million people will develop cancer and about 610,000 will die from it in 2018. The most common cause of cancer death is still lung cancer. Jemal coauthored a study of women with breast cancer from 2004 to 2013 that found being uninsured accounted for more than one-third of the higher death rate for black women.

DJs React to Pres. Trump's Nuclear Button Tweet
Her statement comes after Trump took to Twitter Tuesday to respond to Kim's claim that he possesses a nuclear button on his desk. He said there can be little doubt that worldwide pressure, including sanctions ordered by the U.N.

"Advancing the fight against cancer for all citizens requires broader application of existing cancer control knowledge, including smoking cessation and the increased uptake of cancer-preventing cervical and colorectal cancer screening and HPV vaccination, across all segments of the population, with an emphasis on disadvantaged groups", researchers conclude in the report.

A woman has a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer over her lifetime; a man has a 1 in 9 chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer, the American Cancer Society says.

Cancer also continues to affect men and women differently. On the other hand, lack of insurance among younger black Americans may contribute to their higher mortality rate compared to whites. Breast cancer alone represents 30 percent of all new cancer diagnoses in women.

In women, the overall cancer incidence rate remained stable over the past few decades. Cancer death rates were not statistically different by race in Kentucky and West Virginia, for example, but were the highest of all states for whites.
