First blue moon total eclipse in 150 years coming January 31

Supermoons, meteor shower to light up the sky this January

This year's blue moon total lunar eclipse event is the first in more than 150 years. The communications satellite China is launching this year will sit at what scientists call the second Earth-Moon Lagrangian point, or EML-2, about 37,000 miles above the far side of the Moon. The moon experiences perigree once per orbit, but that doesn't always coincide with a full moon.

Below, we provide a timetable for the main stages of the moon's passage through the Earth's shadow for six time zones - one for Hawaii (HST), one for Alaska (AKST) and four across the U.S and Canada: Pacific (PST), Mountain (MST), Central (CST) and Eastern (EST). It's the third of three that have come in a row, after those in December and on New Year's Day.

The two full moons this January are both supermoons, PAGASA said.

The start of the year 2018 began with a rare version of super moon that was witnessed by people all over the world.

The first full moon for this year happened last January 2, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said. Secondly, the moon will be a supermoon. But since it's rare to get a second full moon in a month, that moon doesn't have a name, making it a "blue moon".

A total lunar eclipse happens when the moon enters the darkest part of the earth's shadow, called the umbra.

"The moon will lose its brightness and take on an eerie, fainter-than-normal glow from the scant sunlight that makes its way through Earth's atmosphere", according to NASA. For some parts of Asia, including India, the eclipse will already be under way as the moon rises.
