Alexa will soon be able to control ovens and microwaves

Amazon’s Treasure Truck at CES 2017 in Las Vegas

"At CES 2018, we have planned several panel and workshop sessions, as well as smart home and offline activations just outside of the Las Vegas Convention Center", Amazon wrote in a blog post last month. Google's own Google Assistant will also be in the spotlight - "where there's Alexa, there's likely to be Google Assistant in the mix", writes The Verge in its CES 2018 preview.

Beyond that, Amazon plans to expand the API to support conventional ovens and other cooking devices.

The tech company has revealed it's adding microwave and oven control features to Alexa, giving it the ability to action requests such as "Alexa, please microwave for 1 minute on high". Users might soon be able to use Amazon Alexa to start cooking or heating food in a microwave. Amazon and Google are expected to remain in the lead with their Echo and Home products respectively, but will face increased competition as new vendors enter the race.

According to a CNBC report, Amazon is talking with advertisers and brands Clorox and Procter & Gamble about advertising via its Alexa voice device.

Being the first brand in Alexa's search results would also be especially valuable, because shoppers are more likely to select the first option available when they can't physically scroll down to see other brands. Instead of pressing umpteen buttons, you can simply ask Alexa to "defrost 3lbs of chicken". GE Appliances, Kenmore, LG, and Samsung will be next, Amazon says.

Amazon is bringing Alexa to smartwatches and headphones

Additionally, Amazon has also announced that Alexa Fund, the company's venture capital arm, has invested in June Life, makers of the June Oven, a countertop smart oven that makes cooking easier, faster, and tastier.

It sounds like a useful area for Amazon to expand Alexa's reach, since people often have their hands full while cooking and appliances' interfaces are often pretty cramped and confusing.

According to a report from Emarketer released in May previous year, Amazon dominates the voice-controlled speaker market.

The Fire TV Stick's biggest shortcoming is that it's still very US-centric.
