Google might set up Pixel 2 retail stores in India

Google job search

The report notes representatives from a couple of malls have confirmed they have received requests from the company to setup outlets. With a plan of 50 such stores and having major brands selling their handsets including the Nexus line, only two stores were set up in Select Citywalk in Delhi and The Great India Place Mall in Noida, both of which shut down due to poor sales.

Google has been financially backing up small companies in India, and also providing them proper mentorship from top technology companies in Silicon Valley. Larger smartphone makes like Google, however, have not really had a hands-on approach, until now. "They got a flavour of how physical stores are also important because you can't explain numerous features online", said a top executive at a mall where the company had a pop-up store for more than a month. He said the company had created a "dark room" to show that the Pixel 2 can take good pictures at night or low light. India is now the world's second largest wireless market with 1.2 billion mobile subscribers and Google will want to tap into that market share. The stores could offer Google Home smart speakers, Chromecast devices, Pixel laptops, Daydream View VR headsets, and more.

Google felt encouraged to open up more stores after the success of their pop-stores.

It is not clear whether Google is planning to the same in other countries or not, but in the US, Google already has two pop-up stores in New York City and Los Angeles. Unlike Apple, which has filed for a single-brand retailing license in India, Google could decide to open its stores and have them operated by franchisees like Samsung and Xiaomi have done with its stores inside India.

"We had done two stores as part of the pilot and then we could not proceed with the project as they did not meet with our desired objectives", said Dilip Modi, chief executive of Spice Connect, according to ET. They launched with 1,000 offline stores, but it looks like Google will have to do a lot more to ensure steady sales of its flagship smartphones in the face of intense competition. Apple, however, has been lobbying hard in India for single-brand retail licence to be able to open its own stores. Joining the bandwagon is Apple too, who is planning to launch its own series of stores all over India.
