Former Miss America winners respond to resignation of top leadership

Miss America suspends CEO over misogynistic emails

CEO and Executive Chairman Sam Haskell, President and COO Josh Randle and Board of Directors Chairman Lynn Weidner all resigned after being implicated in an email scandal in which their emails showed inappropriate criticism of former winners and contestants' appearance, intelligence and sex lives.

The Miss America Organization was founded in 1921 and nowadays annually hosts pageants open to women aged from 17 to 24 who live in the U.S. to participate.

Leaked emails show Haskell allowed or participated in discussions of former pageant winners where their sex lives and weight were derided; 2013 Miss America victor Mallory Hagan (pictured above, at the 2013 GLAAD Awards) received the lion's share of criticism.

The scandal began Thursday, when the Huffington Post published leaked emails showing pageant officials ridiculing past Miss Americas, including crass and sometimes vulgar comments about them.

Mallory Hagan made the request on Facebook early Saturday hours before the top leadership of the New Jersey-based Miss America Organization resigned.

The president, Josh Randle, told The Associated Press his comment responding to an email to his private account about the physical appearance of 2013 victor Mallory Hagan came months before he started working for the Miss America Organization in 2015.

Hagan did not respond to a message from the AP seeking comment Thursday night.

As his departure was announced, Randle apologized on Saturday to 2013 pageant victor Mallory Hagan, whose weight he and others ridiculed in the emails.

Also on Saturday, one of the main recipients of fundraising from the Miss America Organization said it was reviewing its association with Miss America.

"My hope is that this story that broke will bring light to the type of behaviour that's been in leadership of the Miss America Organisation and really help us put in place some people who care and who embody the mission of Miss America", Ms Hagan said in a Twitter video.

In separate statements, the Miss America board confirmed the resignations of Mr Randle, who became president in May and at 29 was the youngest to hold that position with the organisation, as well as Mr Haskell and Mr Weidner.

Mallory Hagan, crowned in 2013, said she knew about some of the behavior.

The CEO's resignation comes just two days after the Post originally reported on the emails, which prompted the the board of directors to investigate.

The organization announced the resignations a day after dozens of former Miss America signed a petition calling on the group's leadership to step down. In the emails written by Haskell, the former CEO made lewd jokes about women from past competitions being "c-ts".

The internal emails, which the BBC has not seen, are reported to have included name-calling, slut-shaming and fat-shaming of some of the contestants who had taken part in the pageant.
