Schiphol airport evacuated as man held

Schiphol Plaza, the airport's shopping area, was evacuated straight after the incident but has now been re-opened.

"The man threatened with a knife and the military police shot him", spokesman Stan Verberkt said, according to Sky News.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are not yet clear and police have not revealed whether the incident was terror related.

A yet-to-be identified 29-year-old knife-wielding man was shot by security operatives at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport and detained for questioning after making threats.

Police at Schiphol airport near Amsterdam shot and arrested a man who allegedly had a knife.

The tweet from Dutch police stated that the "Situation is under control".

"He was injured and has been taken into custody". There were no reports of injuries.

The emergency prompted the authorities to evacuate part of Schiphol, one of Europe's busiest airports. No details of the man's condition have been released by the police.

"Air traffic is experiencing no further consequences", it added.

But the airport tweeted later that the plaza was "reopened to the public again". A small part is still closed down.

Dutch police evacuated the worldwide airport, 9km west of Amsterdam, after the man threatened to use the knife.

Schiphol is one of Europe's busiest airports and Friday is one of its busiest days of the week.
