Bitcoin mania: Google's top searches in 2017 dominated by digital currency craze

Performers participate in the parade at the Notting Hill Carnival in London Britain

While it's far from the only major story in 2017, what's breathtaking about these results is how the recent reckoning about bad behavior by men in power came to overtake the news cycle in the final quarter of the year and how, as more allegations surface every day, it continues to grow. What better way, then, to measure the year that was than by examining the words we searched for the most on the internet?

Looking only at searches about people, three of the USA top 5 were related to the widespread sexual harassment allegations faced by many in Hollywood and Washington, D.C.: Lauer, producer Harvey Weinstein, and actor Kevin Spacey.

It's notable, too, that Lauer is at the top of the searches.

Hurricane Irma took sixth place, followed by the Bus Eireann strike, August's fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather, the Eurovision and finally, at number 10, disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

FCC, FTC announce partnership to police internet after net neutrality repeal
As the vote on net neutrality - now scheduled for this Thursday, December 14 - awaits the FCC, tensions are high. The FCC chair's office did not respond to a request for comment Monday.

In fairness, we did spend time trying to decipher the madness, googling "what is covfefe?" right after The Donald tweeted last May: "Despite the constant negative press covfefe". But Lauer was in living rooms on a daily basis as a lead host of Today for 20 years.

"How to" searches were about making fluffy slime, buying Bitcoin and more. And Hurricanes Harvey, Jose, and Maria joined Irma on the top global news searches list. "What is Bitcoin" was also fourth on the list of most searched for "What is" questions.

The iPhone 8 may not be Apple's ultimate flagship, but the curiosity around it ahead of its launch has put it on top of Google's most searched keywords list for this year.
