Air NZ forced to trim schedule due to 787 engine maintenance

Some flights will be retimed or cancelled for checks on Air New Zealand's Dreamliners

Passengers had said the captain announced a minor technical problem with one of the engines.

Air New Zealand will cancel six worldwide flights and retime others between 7 and 10 December to accommodate urgent maintenance on the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines that power its Boeing 787-9 fleet.

In the most recent incident a 787 was taking off from Auckland when the pilots noticed problems.

"In addition to these changes, Air New Zealand is focused on securing replacement aircraft capacity".

Under their joint venture alliance that took effect in January 2015, the two airlines will continue to operate one daily return service each on the Singapore-Auckland route, with a third service operated by Singapore Airlines during the Northern Winter season and Air New Zealand during the Northern Summer season.

The Trent 1000 engine has had a number of technical hitches, which the manufacturer has been working hard to resolve, with a wide range of operators in recent years.

Its chief commissioner Jane Meares said investigators were reviewing aircraft records, including flight recorders, examining the engines and interviewing flight crew.

"Rolls-Royce has advised that some of the Trent 1000 engines in the airline's Boeing 787-9 fleet require maintenance sooner than previously indicated", Air New Zealand said in a statement.

An investigation is underway after two Air NZ Dreamliner airplanes experienced engine abnormalities this week. A few weeks later Virgin Atlantic said it was had also experienced similar troubles with its Trent 1000 engines. "This is the continuation of work which started previous year to upgrade Trent 1000 engines to the latest standard".
