Modi praises Sunni Board's stance on Ram Mandir hearing issue

Clarify Stand On Ram Temple: Amit Shah To Rahul Gandhi Over Kapil Sibal's Comments In Court

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday welcomed the statement from the Sunni Waqf Board that the pleading made by their counsel Kapil Sibal in the Supreme Court to defer the hearing on Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute till 2019 was "erroneous"."You tell me what 2019 general elections have to do with Ram temple at Ayodhya", Mr Modi asked the gathering."I congratulate Sunni Waqf Board, I am also grateful to them".

The Supreme Court had fixed the next hearing for the long-standing matter for February 8, 2018.

"I learnt that the prime minister and Amit Shah have said that I represented the Sunni Waqf Board in the Supreme Court, but I was never representing the Sunni Waqf Board in the Ayodhya issue".

"Yesterday, Sibal advocated the cause of the Muslim community. They are least bothered about the nation", Modi said. You can present your argument quoting all facts and laws to save Babri Masjid. "We want a solution to the issue (case) at the earliest", he added. "You want to stop the hearing of Ram temple (issue) in the name of elections", Modi told a well-attended election rally at Dhandhuka in Ahmedabad district. "Do you want to keep the issue unresolved for political gain or loss in the elections?" he asked the Congress.

Sibal had, yesterday, demanded for the next hearing in the case to be held only in July 2019 after the completion of the next Lok Sabha polls, citing political ramifications.

Sibal said instead of worrying about whom he represents in court, the prime minister should be more concerned about the problems before the country and his home state of Gujarat.

He asked Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi to take a stand on the Ramjanamabhoomi matter.

Sibal, a former Union minister in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance that governed India between 2004 and 2014, was appearing for one of the litigants in the case, but the Congress was quick to clarify on Wednesday that his plea was not consistent with its stand. I was never a Sunni Waqf Board lawyer.

Modi said he faced a similar situation during the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls when his government had to make its stand clear on the contentious issue of triple talaq in the apex court. "We have got nothing to do with his statement", Mehboob said.

Modi, while remembering Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on his 61st death anniversary today, claimed the Congress did injustice to the architect of the Constitution as well.
