Ali Abdullah Saleh killed in UAE controlled area

Yemen rebel alliance teeters as strongman turns to Saudis

The former president of Yemen, Ali Abdullah Saleh, was killed on Monday in a reported RPG and gun attack while trying to flee fierce fighting between his loyalists and his former allies the Houthis in the capital Sanaa.

"I appeal to the leader Saleh to show more wisdom and maturity. and not to heed incitement calls", Abdel-Malek al-Houthi said in a speech on the group's Al-Masirah TV, adding that his group was ready to sit down for arbitration and abide by any ruling. It was not immediately possible to confirm the authenticity of the video, which was circulating widely.

Saleh loyalists and Houthi rebels drove President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi's internationally-recognised government out of the capital in 2014.

In May 2015, following Saudi-led coalition air raids on his home in Sanaa, Saleh officially announced for the first time the establishment of his alliance with the Houthis.

The Huthis stopped the four-car convoy about 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Sanaa and shot dead Saleh, GPC secretary general Arif al-Zouka and his deputy Yasir al-Awadi, a military source said. Residents and medics told Reuters at least 125 were killed in the fighting on Monday, according to Reuters.

Yemen Interior Ministry Confirms Death of Ex President Saleh

The fighting in the capital of Sanaa caused residents to cower in their homes as explosions rocked the city overnight.

The Houthis' political office on December 2 accused Saleh of staging a "coup" against "an alliance he never believed in". Iran supports the Houthis but denies arming them.

Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamad attempted to mediate to end the tension between the two conflicting forces loyal to Ali Abdullah Saleh and Houthis in Sanaa.

Saleh, 75, ruled Yemen for more than three decades until his ouster under popular pressure in 2012.

The country descended into a wider civil war that has killed more than 10,000 people while drawing in a Saudi-led military coalition, backed by the United States. He remained in the country, however, and continued to wield political power from behind the scenes.

In other areas like Fag Attan, Saleh's forces are still surrounded by Houthis.
