Oscar Pistorius murder sentence increased from six to 13 years

South African Court More Than Doubles Oscar Pistorius's Prison Sentence for Murder

Pistorius, whose lower legs were amputated because of a congenital defect, soared to global fame after becoming the first amputee to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

In the latest setback to the tainted athlete, the jail term has been increased to 15 years of imprisonment - more than twice of the earlier sentence for shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp to death.

After Judge Masipa initially refused leave to appeal against the sentence, the State approached the SCA, arguing that six years imprisonment for murder was shockingly inappropriate and would set a bad precedent.

The Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein has now given Pistorius the minimum 15 years prescribed for Reeva's murder, as he has already served 1 year and 7 months.

Pistorius claimed that he fired four gunshots through the bathroom door, behind which was Reeva, only because he believed that she was an intruder.

Tania Koen, a spokeswoman for the Steenkamp family, said: "This is an emotional thing for them".

The sentence is the standard term for murder under South African law.

The Blade Runner shot and killed Steenkamp at his home on Valentine's Day 2013.

Donald Trump I'm Teed Off Again ... This Time with Tiger!!!
However, Trump noted that it would be a quick round so he could get back to work on bringing more jobs back to America. After the correction was made , Trump golfed at his Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.

Oscar's brother Carl Pistorius tweeted that he was "Shattered".

"I am of the view that a noncustodial sentence would send the wrong message to the community, but a long sentence would not be appropriate because it would lack the elements of mercy", Judge Thokozile Masipa said at the sentencing.

The new sentence of 13 years and five months took into account the one year and seven months Pistorius served in prison and under house arrest after his initial manslaughter conviction.

The Organisation Justice for Victims tweeted that 13 years was "still no justice".

Pistorius, who turned 31 on Wednesday, is being held at the Atteridgeville Correctional Centre on the outskirts of the South African capital, Pretoria.

"He is a person well-trained in the use of firearms and was holding his weapon at the ready in order to shoot", the court's decision read.

Steenkamp's family said at the time they were "satisfied" with the five-year sentence, even if it wasn't what they were hoping for.
