Multiple shots fired in London's Oxford Circus area

The scene outside the London Palladium in the west end of London after Oxford Circus station was evacuated Friday Nov. 24 2017. British police said Friday they were responding to reports of an incident at Oxford Circus subway station. AP

The most recent involved a bomb on a packed London Underground train in south-west London in September, which injured 30 people.

Police said they received numerous calls reporting that gunshots were fired on Oxford Street and at the station at 4:38pm.

The force said two men, aged 21 and 40, attended a police station voluntarily and were interviewed following an appeal. "They would now like to speak to these two people in the CCTV images, who they believe may have information about the incident and the circumstances around the incident", said the BTP.

One woman is said to have sustained injuries during the evacuation, and eight others were later taken to the hospital with minor injuries. "Officers are on scene", the transit police tweeted. A police presence remains in the area to support the public. It was an hour-and-a-half before Met Police gave the all-clear.

Scotland Yard initially treated the incident as if it was terror-related - but the incident has now been stood down after no evidence of gunfire was found.

'Officers responded in line with our procedures of a terrorist incident, this included armed officers from British Transport Police and the Metropolitan Police.

"Officers working with colleagues from British Transport Police carried out an urgent search of the area".

The station is now closed, please avoid the area at this time.

Shocking footage from the scene shows as Black Friday shoppers ran screaming from the scene, hiding in nearby shops and buildings.

"I got up to the top by the ticket barriers and they were all open".

Tourist Lanna Woodward said she witnessed the aftermath of the panic on Oxford Street.

Officers investigating the incident - which saw hundreds of people break into stampedes, and frenzied reports of a gunman on the loose - now believe it began with the "altercation", which soon escalated into mass panic.

"There were people running in all directions".

Paying tribute to the "swift response" of emergency services, mayor Sadiq Khan urged Londoners to "remain vigilant and don't panic".
