Uber just gave its users another reason not to trust the company

Uber hacked, data for 57 million people exposed

This isn't his first run-in with the ride-hailing company - just past year his office reached a settlement with Uber over its collection and use of riders' personal information and its delayed disclosure of a 2014 data breach. The company didn't find any evidence of fraud and drivers whose license numbers had been stolen would get free identity theft protection and credit monitoring.

Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi, who replaced co-founder Travis Kalanick as CEO in August, said the company had fired two senior security officials involved in the cover-up. He was not at the helm when it happened.

The company said it paid the hackers $132,000 to delete the stolen data.

A SECRET data hack affecting 57 million Uber customers and drivers has been exposed.

Uber would not confirm it paid this ransom.

The Uber announcement comes a few months after Equifax revealed that sensitive information of more than 143 million Americans had been exposed and is vulnerable to financial fraud. "While I can't erase the past, I can commit on behalf of every Uber employee that we will learn from our mistakes", said Khosrowshahi.

The company demanded that the hackers sign nondisclosure agreements and then went on to disguise the payout fee as a 'bug bounty, ' The New York Times reports.

Expect double the earthquakes in 2018, say researchers
But after the fifth year of Earth's "slowdown", the researchers found that the incidence number jumps to an average of 25 to 30. On one hand, there is the first step towards a model of potential natural disaster prediction, at least on a time basis.

Khosrowshahi said he had only recently learned of the breach, which happened in October 2016. The company tracked down the hackers and pushed them to sign nondisclosure agreements, according to the people familiar with the matter.

The news that ride hailing service Uber has suffered, and covered up, a major hack means that millions of people could unknowingly have had their data put at risk.

He said Uber has hired Matt Olsen, a former general counsel at the National Security Agency and director of the National Counterterrorism Center, "to help me think through how best to guide and structure our security teams and processes going forward".

If Uber wants to continue its rise across Europe, it has to reverse its attitude to hacks, come clean and work tirelessly to make its protections and reporting systems watertight, said Dean Armstrong QC, cyber law barrister at Setfords Solicitors.

Uber has always failed to protect driver and passenger data.

The hackers gained access of information that was stored on GitHub. A number of civil suits are also ongoing and the service faces bans in London and other cities due to what has been termed reckless behaviour. Uber may have violated Californian breach disclosure laws as well. While Khosrowshahi is promising change, Kalanick's place in a leadership role serves as a reminder they are keeping someone who signed off on controversial issues tied to the company.
