Iranian Behzad Mesri charged in HBO hack, 'Game of Thrones' script theft

HBO's 'Game of Thrones' hacker hit with charges in the US

Behzad Mesri, an Iran-based hacker, allegedly hacked into HBO servers in May, stole confidential company data over the course of several months, and then attempted to extort HBO for $6 million in Bitcoin, according to the indictment released by US prosecutors in Manhattan Tuesday morning.

"For the rest of his life - and he's a relatively young man in his late 20s - he will never be able to travel outside Iran, " he said.

Mr Mesri, a member of the Iran-supported Turk Black Hat Security team, conducted "hundreds of website defacements" in the United States and across the world, prosecutors said.

Behzad Mesri is described as a "self-professed" computer hacking expert who has worked on behalf of the Iranian military, targeting Israeli infrastructure among other targets.

After pilfering info from the cable giant over summer 2017, Mesri tried to extort $6 million in Bitcoin from the company, according to prosecutors. "As a member of that group, Mesri conducted hundreds of website defacements using the online hacker pseudonym "Skote Vahshat" against websites in the United States and elsewhere around the world". "Yes it's true! HBO is hacked.Beware of heart attacks".

USA prosecutors accuse Behzad Mesri of stealing scripts and plot summaries for unaired episodes of the Game Of Thrones TV series, and unaired episodes of other shows including the Curb Your Enthusiasm comedy series. Now, after plenty of investigating, the US Department of Justice has found the culprit and issued an indictment.

A series of criminal cases could increase pressure on lawmakers to act, these people said.

"We made that determination that we were not likely to be able to get him and we should go public with it, " Kim said.

On Tuesday, federal authorities unsealed an indictment against Behzad Mesri, an Iranian national.

"In the simplest of terms, he lurked in the alleyways of the Internet, identified the vulnerabilities of his victim, and pickpocketed their information from thousands of miles away", FBI Assistant Director William Sweeney said in a statement.
