German elections: president asks Merkel to break deadlock

Month-long negotiations to form a coalition government fail, plunging Germany into a crisis that could see it hold new elections.

The combination of ideologically-disparate parties had not been tried before in a national government, and collapsed when the Free Democrats walked out of talks on Sunday night. In a separate interview with broadcaster ZDF, Merkel said she is "skeptical" about such a government."Germany needs a stable government that doesn't need to search for a majority for every decision", she said.Merkel also said she was still prepared to serve as chancellor for another four years, assuming a viable coalition can be formed.

However, she said the SPD would use the talks with Steinmeier to try to find future solutions.

As result, an alliance led by Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) and including the Greens and FDP was the only coalition option the chancellor had after September's inconclusive election.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier urged them to make compromises for Germany's "well-being", amid a situation he said was unprecedented.

"It is a day of deep reflection on how to go forward in Germany", she said.

She said that she "will do everything to ensure that this country is well-led through these hard weeks".

Whether Germany chooses to have another election in the New Year or it's first minority government since WW2, this could signal end of Mrs Merkel's tenure.

Immigration policy was the main dividing point among the parties. If there is no agreement, Merkel can form a minority government or the president could call a new election.

On migration, the Christian Social Union was pushing for an annual cap on refugees, while the Greens wanted to allow more categories of recent migrants to bring their closest relatives to join them.
