London buses to be powered by coffee waste

Lots of the city's 9,500 buses already run on biofuel derived from food waste, specifically cooking oil and beef tallow, and London's mayor Sadiq Khan has set an even more ambitious goal of creating a zero-emission transit system for the entire city by 2050.

Bio-bean employs an industrialised process to recycle waste coffee grounds into advanced biofuels, which are a clean, cheap, local and sustainable alternative to imported fuels often burning hotter and for longer than conventional fuels.

To create the fuel, coffee grounds are dried and processed before coffee oil is extracted.

Coffee grounds are now being used to produce biofuel for London buses, it has been confirmed. Bio-bean then works with its partner Argent Energy to turn the oil into a usable B20 biofuel.

Bio-bean founder Arthur Kay, a Stanford University graduate, told the site that the company hopes to expand next to France, which consumes 38 billion cups of coffee a year, but recognizes there will always be more diesel than coffee in the world - at least, for the time being.

Bio-bean has been using coffee to deliver energy for a short while now, giving households the ability to burn coffee instead of wood for their fires.

Funding for sports programs at question in new tax bill
By 2027, families making less than $75,000 would face tax boosts while those making more would see cuts. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., announced Wednesday that he would not vote for the Senate tax plan as it stands.

Some 6,000 litres of coffee oil have been produced so far, the company said.

We have started in the United Kingdom, but imagine the potential of a country like South Africa, that drinks more than three-billion cups of coffee a year.

The collaboration with Shell is part of the oil giant's #makethefuture energy initiative, which supports entrepreneurs working on low carbon innovations.

Shell UK country chair Sinead Lynch explains the inspiration for the company's campaign.

In fact, if everyone in London just drank a mere 12 cups of coffee a day, we'd be able to power every single bus in London for a year.
