Tommy Robinson's Twitter Loses Verified Status And Blue Tick

Twitter is going to start removing verification from users 2

Sure, being verified on social media isn't always as good as people think, but after a recent blowup, Twitter says it's addressing the "perception" of endorsement a blue checkmark confers.

Twitter's move to clarify the meaning of its verification badge and revoke the status for people who are famous for their racism or sexism or hate speech are great first steps.

Unacceptable behaviour includes intentionally misleading others by changing display names or bios, promoting hate against protected groups, harassing other users, encouraging violence, or breaking Twitter's rules in general.

A Twitter spokesperson declined to comment on further details about the re-verification of accounts and just said, "We don't have anything to share at the moment beyond the Tweets we just sent". "We have paused all general verifications while we work and will report back soon".

The company announced new guidelines for the verification program, and will remove verification from accounts that fall outside those rules.

Amongst the accounts stripped of their tick is Jason Kessler, who took part in the organization of a far-right march that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Richard Spence, a white supremacist. Twitter is removing badges from white supremacists and members of the alt-right.

The claims by those who have lost their blue ticks that they are being censored are only to be expected - even if the claims are not true.

Lebanon's Hariri to fly to France in coming days, Elysee Palace says
Bahaa Hariri's name has been mentioned in Lebanese media reports as a possible Saudi-backed candidate to replace his brother. Velayati said Hariri in their meeting offered to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia and he welcomed the offer.

Twitter has subsequently updated its policies so that those who do violate its guidelines can now have their verified status removed.

Tweeting content that incites hate and harassment, includes violent or unsafe behavior, or violates Twitter's rules, could lead to removal of the verification badge.

Other Twitter users associated with the far-right - including the Proud Boys and Alex Jones - were able to keep their badges.

Twitter said they will continue reviewing accounts for any other violations. And by choosing to strictly go after people from one ideological camp (no matter how hateful some of the speech in question may be), the company has reinforced the idea that they would prefer to be a liberal echo chamber.

Twitter's new policies arrive a week after Kessler's account was verified, which was met with widespread outrage.

For any and all who have sent in an application for verification, you may have to hold tight a little longer.
