California launch of new United States weather satellite postponed

Boulder's Ball Aerospace, NOAA primed for polar-orbiting satellite launch has been seven years in the planning

The Launch Configuration Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) measures the electromagnetic emissions and subjects it to expected electromagnetic radiation that the satellite would experience at the launch site.

A United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket carrying the Joint Polar Satellite System 1 weather satellite stands atop its launchpad at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California after a rocket issue prevented a planned liftoff on November 14, 2017. "The Flight 2 development, build and test have proceeded smoothly and follow the success of the Flight 1 instrument for NPOESS Preparatory Project". It was created to be the functional equivalent follow-on to the Advanced Microwave Sounder Units with improved sampling and coverage. JPSS is a collaborative program between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and its acquisition agent, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The National Weather Service anticipates being able to take advantage of these measurements to improve its forecasts, particularly for high-impact weather events, such as hurricanes and winter storms.

Several instruments aboard the satellite will provide detailed observations of temperature, air moisture, ice, snow, fog, wildfires, precipitation and ozone around the world.

Greg Robinson, who started the first six games of the season at left tackle, was waived-injured on Friday with an ankle injury . Kizer was having his best game of the season before suffering a rib injury that forced him to the locker room.

The Joint Polar Satellite System-1, or JPSS-1, spacecraft is checked out on October 8, 2015, at Ball Aerospace in Boulder, Colorado. Once it's operational, it will be renamed NOAA-20. The mission is a joint effort between NOAA and NASA.

A United Launch Alliance live tweet said that the Delta II rocket had just a 66-second window to launch JPSS-1 into the correct orbit. Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems built the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder and the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System instrument. Shortly after the postponement was revealed, Omar Baez Jr., a NASA senior launch director, confirmed that the plan was to retry the launch again at 1:47 a.m. Wednesday.

Assuming that JPSS-1 launches successfully on Tuesday and functions normally in orbit, the USA will again have two working polar satellites at work at the same time.
