In the immediate aftermath of the Post report Thursday, a wave of national Republican leaders called for Moore to drop out of the race if the allegations are true. "You know, this is a bad situation", Toomey said on NBC News' "Meet the Press".

Toomey didn't rule out the possibility that Senate Republicans might work to unseat Moore if he wins the special election against Democrat Doug Jones on December 12.

The White House, pointedly noting that President Trump did not back Moore during the primary, said Trump will probably weigh in on the Senate race when he returns from Asia this week.
