Iran rejects Macron call for talks on Iranian missiles

Arab League to meet on Iran at Saudi request: Diplomats

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has responded to the call of the French President to hold talks on the country's ballistic missile program, firmly rejecting the idea and noting that it is exclusively defensive in nature.

"We would like to see sanctions on Iran for its support of terrorism and sanctions on Iran for violating the ballistic missile resolutions of the United Nations", Adel Al-Jubeir, Saudi minister of foreign affairs, told CNBC Thursday.

Macron, during a visit to Dubai on Thursday, said he was "very concerned" by Tehran's missile programme after Saudi Arabia claimed it intercepted a missile fired from Yemen last month.

Under the JCPOA, Iran undertook to put limits on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related sanctions imposed against Tehran.

"We have told French officials repeatedly that the nuclear deal is not negotiable and other issues will not be allowed to be added to it", Qassemi said, according to a statement on the ministry's website.

"There are negotiations we need to start on Iran's ballistic missiles", Macron said. Washington has also called for the United Nations to hold Tehran accountable for violating two United Nations security Council resolutions.

Saudi Arabia and its allies intervened in neighboring Yemen in March 2015 to push back the Iran-backed Huthi rebels which controls the capital Sanaa and restore the government of Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi to power.

Qassemi urged France to pursue "realistic, fair and far-sighted" policies on the ongoing developments in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf region. The fate of the deal has fallen on the US Congress which has 60 days to reimpose nuclear sanctions.

The deal between Tehran and six world powers including France, Russia, the US, China, Germany, and the United Kingdom involves the removal of sanctions in exchange for Iran curbing its nuclear program.

Iran has denied any involvement in the missile attack while calling the Saudi accusations "false, destructive, irresponsible and, above all, provocative".
