Twitter halts `broken' verification after tool helped trolls

Twitter verification is temporarily on hold

Twitter has suspended its verification process after Jason Kessler, the organizer of the white supremacist deadly rally in Charlottesville, received a blue checkmark.

It added, "We recognise that we have created this confusion and need to resolve it".

Ed Ho, general manager of Twitter's consumer products and engineering group also chimed in: "We knew it was busted as people confuse ID verification with endorsement". But those protesting Kessler's verification note that Twitter offers special features and even abuse filters to verified users - a design choice that implies such users are privileged in some way from non verified users.

"Looks like I FINALLY got verified by Twitter", Kessler tweeted on Tuesday. As a result, verification was naturally a much more exclusive club, typically requiring a much larger presence than might be necessary to qualify now, perhaps contributing to the perception that verified accounts must have been deemed "important" by Twitter.

Twitter declined to comment on what, exactly, "general verifications" means - and whether it opens the door for specific accounts to be verified - or why it took so long to act on changing the verification system. "We hope opening up this application process results in more people finding great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for these creators and influencers to connect with a broader audience".

Yahoo ex-boss shows everyone's in dark on hacks
That includes a credit-monitoring app that will be available in January, and free credit locks from the company. And while Barros discussed Equifax's tools for breach victims, he noted that barely any people are using it.

After asking how the system now works, a Twitter spokesperson pointed TheWrap to its page outlining verification details, where it says "a verified badge does not imply an endorsement by Twitter". Optically, it suggested the opposite: that Twitter was conferring legitimacy and authority to a known white supremacist. "Looks like it was payback time", he wrote, according to reports.

Several celebrities on Twitter were quick to condemn Twitter's decision to give Kessler the badge.

The company says the suspension is only temporary, and that it is working on a fix.

They still have yet to explain why Donald Trump is permitted to issue death threats over the platform or why Matt McGorry blocked me.
