Yahoo ex-boss shows everyone's in dark on hacks

Former Yahoo boss Marissa Mayer will be quizzed by US senators

Mayer says Yahoo, which originally said only 1 billion accounts were affected, didn't find out about the hack until it got data from the government in 2016 and still hasn't figured out how it happened, though she says Russian intelligence officers have launched attacks on Yahoo systems.

Verizon acquired most of Yahoo's assets in June, the same month Mayer stepped down.

U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), chairman of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, will convene a hearing titled "Protecting Consumers in the Era of Major Data Breaches", at approximately 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 8, 2017, in room Dirksen 106.

Yahoo revealed it suffered the largest hack in history, with hitting 3 billion accounts on the website.

"As CEO, these thefts occurred during my tenure, and I want to sincerely apologize to each and every one of our users", she told the Senate Commerce Committee, testifying alongside the interim and former CEOs of Equifax Inc and a senior Verizon Communications Inc executive.

Richard Smith, who was Equifax's CEO when the attack occurred earlier this year, also is set to testify. That includes a credit-monitoring app that will be available in January, and free credit locks from the company.

Thousands of North West workers set for living wage pay rise
The supermarket has committed itself to an additional annual investment of over £3.5m in order to cover the cost of the rise. The wage increase is above the Government's living wage, which is set at £7.50 for employees over the age of 25 years.

During the testimony, both companies talked up how they've changed since suffering their historic breaches - while senators called out their inaction.

The stolen account information may have included names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords and, in some cases, encrypted or unencrypted security questions and answers, the company said. Richard Blumenthal of CT says enforcing punishments for data breaches on executives like Mayer could motivate companies to protect users' data. Equifax's CEO said the same of a breach involving 145 mln consumers.

And while Barros discussed Equifax's tools for breach victims, he noted that barely any people are using it.

The current and former chief executives of credit bureau Equifax, which disclosed in September that a data breach affected as many as 145.5 million US consumers, said they did not know who was responsible for the attack.

As Verizon takes over Yahoo, Zacharia promised better security for the future, though senators remained skeptical during the hearing. Sen.
