Several people were shot Sunday when a gunman opened fire at a rural church outside San Antonio.

A mass shooting at a small church in mid-Texas has left up to 27 people dead, including children, while many more have been wounded, according to reports.

The number of victims and the extent of their injuries was not immediately clear.

Sutherland Springs is a community of about 400 people 30 miles (48 kilometres) southeast of San Antonio.

He opened fire shortly before noon while people were attending a morning service.

"About half of our church members are gone", she said.
