Lebanese prime minister suggests he fears for his life, resigns

Lebanese PM resigns suddenly, fearing for his life

In a stunning move on Saturday, Hariri announced his resignation in a televised statement from Saudi Arabia, citing an assassination plot targeting him.

The leader of Lebanese Shi'ite group Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, said on Sunday that Saudi Arabia had forced Lebanon's Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri to resign, and called for calm and patience in Lebanon. In the speech, which aired on Saudi television, Hariri said he feared for his life, describing the political atmosphere as similar to what it was in 2005, when his father, then-Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, was assassinated in a truck bomb attack in Beirut. It says Bahraini citizens are banned from traveling to Lebanon, as well.

Former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri gives a speech during the opening ceremony of the second "Kuwait Financial Forum" in Kuwait City on 31 October 2010. I and my government have tried to keep to a policy of non-intervention in the crises in our region, but Iran keeps trying to intervene in Lebanon's internal affairs.

"The sudden resignation of Mr. Hariri and his statement in another country is not only surprising and regrettable but is also an indication of his playing a game designed by those who want ill for the region, and the victor of this game is not Arabic or Muslim countries but the Zionists", Qassemi said. "The resignation of al-Hariri and his comments on Iran are a wake-up call to the worldwide community to act against Iran, which is trying to turn Syria into a second Lebanon". Hariri became Lebanon's prime minister in 2016 in a deal that also brought in Hezbollah ally Michel Aoun as the country's president.
