Starcraft II Is Going Free To Play Later This Month

StarCraft 2 is going to be free to play later this year

In a surprising opening move for Blizzcon 2017, Blizzard Entertainment announced today that Starcraft II is going free-to-play. That includes free access to the Wings of Liberty campaign (or Heart of the Swarm if players already own Wings of Liberty), cooperative mode and competitive multiplayer.

If you've been a big StarCraft II fan for a while and have dutifully purchased the three expansions (or even just one), you'll be granted a free Ghost skin as well as three new portraits - something as a way for Blizzard to say thanks.

In other words, you can now play all of StarCraft II's multiplayer, every Co-op Commander, and the entire first campaign in the single-player story, for free.

While some free-to-play games take a looser approach to the term by making the game free to download but essential content available through microtransactions, Blizzard seems to be avoiding that heavily criticized structure.

Harvey Weinstein scandal: NY police building case to arrest Weinstein
The movie mogul has "unequivocally denied" allegations of non-consensual sex. The investigation is on-going", the NYPD said in a statement Thursday night.

Online multiplayer will be accessible free of charge once unlocked, which happens after achieving 10 First Wins of the Day in either unranked or versus modes.

Happy to see StarCraft II go free-to-play?

"We wanted to cut through that confusion and announce that StarCraft 2 is free-to-play". In the seven years since it released in 2010, StarCraft II has awarded over $11M in prizes to competitors.

Not too long ago, some Battle.net owners received free copies of Starcraft 2 for seemingly no reason, but most gamers weren't among the lucky few who got these copies. Log in between November 8 and December 8 and Blizzard will give you Heart of the Swarm, the zerg-centric second part, for your trouble. Anybody out there still holding out on StarCraft II? Already own Wings of Liberty? This is our way to preserve the quality and integrity of the ranked experience. But, Kerrigan, Raynor, and Artanis will be uncapped for free! Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void and Nova Covert Ops games from the publisher will be available at $14.99 each, which is the original base price for this game.
