Mobile and Sprint finally, officially, say they definitely won't merge

With T-Mobile Deal All But Dead, Softbank Looks To Charter

This would be the second time an attempted merger of Sprint, controlled by SoftBank Group Corp (T:), and T-Mobile, controlled by Deutsche Telekom (DE:), has failed.

"The prospect of combining with Sprint has been compelling for a variety of reasons, including the potential to create significant benefits for consumers and value for shareholders", John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile US said in the statement.

T-Mobile made a revised offer, which Sprint is considering, the Journal said.

Sprint Corp (S.N) and T-Mobile US Inc (TMUS.O) said on Saturday they have called off merger talks to create a stronger USA wireless to rival market leaders, leaving No. 4 provider Sprint to engineer a turnaround on its own.

Sprint has sought to strengthen its balance sheet by cutting costs. If T-Mobile and Sprint had aligned, they would collectively rise to the number three provider slot in the USA mobile market. The two sides could reach a deal within weeks, but the two companies could still fail to agree on deal terms.

La Vanguardia: Spanish judge orders arrest of ousted Catalan leader
The jailing of the former ministers caused an uproar in Catalonia, where pro-independence protesters filled the streets. A Spanish judge has jailed eight ousted Catalan ministers, after the region attempted to declare independence .

Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Höttges said in a statement on Saturday that T-Mobile has a "strong basis for growth in the upcoming years". But with the new Trump administration, it was thought regulators might be more relaxed about a merger. What can the next era of T-Mobile and Sprint do to gain ground?

Legere said that T-Mobile has "been out-growing this industry for the last 15 quarters, delivering outstanding value for shareholders, and driving significant change across wireless".

A source told Reuters in July that SoftBank was considering an acquisition offer for Charter in a deal where it would combine the cable company with Sprint.

Reports suggest that a major hurdle to the merger wasn't Sprint or T-Mobile directly, but rather the their ownership.

It is still possible that Sprint will reject the new terms or decline investing any more effort into the potential merger.
