Tourists to be banned from climbing Australia's most famous attraction

A decision on a climbing ban was made today at Uluru and has been a long time coming for some

Climbing Uluru is set to be a thing of the past after the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park board decided unanimously to ban the activity, starting in 2019.

After over 70 years of tourism, Uluru will be off limits for climbers from October 2019, local authorities have confirmed.

Traditional owners have been asking visitors not to climb Uluru since the 1985 handback and signs requesting people reconsider climbing have been in place at the base of the climb area since 1992.

A park board made up of a majority of the traditional owners of the land where the rock stands made the decision Wednesday.

He said the Anangu people had felt intimidation over the years to keep the climb open because it was a top tourist attraction, but they wanted to close it because of its cultural significance.

Council executive member and park chairman Sammy Wilson said the board had been considering a ban for some time.

United States pressure behind delay in vote for 'Greater Jerusalem Bill'
Intelligence minister Israel Katz, a supporter of the bill, has said this would "ensure a Jewish majority in a united Jerusalem". The release said they discussed issues facing Israel and how to bolster the relationship between the country and Wisconsin.

Figures from Parks Australia indicated only 16 per cent of visitors to the park made the climb between 2011 and 2015, down from about 74 per cent in the 1990s.

Australian tourists are most likely to climb the rock followed by the Japanese, according to the park's figures.

And the date of October 26 was chosen because it's an anniversary; on October 26 in 1985, custodianship of the park was transferred back to its Aboriginal owners, the Anangu.

The traditional landowners, the Anangu, have always refused to climb Uluru and consider it sacred.

The board can also close the climb if it believes people will continue to visit the sacred site without being able to climb.

The iconic sandstone monolith, also known as Ayers Rock, will be placed off limits to climbers in 2018.
