What NFL players are saying about Bob McNair's 'inmates' comment

Report: NFL Owner on Protests: 'Can't Have the Inmates Running the Prison'

Several members of the Houston Texans NFL team considered staging a walkout from practice on Friday, over comments made by their team's owner that appeared to compare players who kneel during the national anthem to "inmates". That isn't going to stop McNair from trying, however.

"I'm 100 percent with these players", O'Brien said.

McNair later spoke to Vincent privately and apologized, saying he didn't intend his words to be taken literally, which Vincent reportedly accepted.

McNair is an ardent supporter of President Donald Trump, who is a fierce critic of players kneeling during the anthem, and offered his solution to the issue during a recent visit to SC. "I never meant to offend anyone and I was not referring to our players", McNair wrote in a statement released by the Texans. "So, if I say a figure of speech that's not socially okay I'm going to get fined". "If any of the players were offended by what was reported, I'm sorry about that, and I apologized to them for that".

Texans players, however, have not been so quick to accept McNair's apology.

"I think it was ignorant", Brown added.

"I used a figure of speech that was never meant to be taken literally", McNair said. "It's awful. It's frustrating". "I'm not surprised by it".

After McNair said those words in the league meeting, the ESPN story said it "stunned some in the room".

I'm not sure if I'm buying this latest explanation.

The one comment has opened a floodgate of criticism toward McNair. "Those feelings were said".

"The message was more to be careful who you have private conversations with, because things that you think are confidential can spread like wildfire", Brown said. Goodell recently said he would not institute a rule that players stand.

"This is how you view us: 'You're an inmate".

The mandate proposal had the support of only nine owners, according to the report. The ESPN report described Jones' anger with San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York for allowing former star quarterback Colin Kaepernick to kneel a year ago, setting off the league's national anthem "crisis".

At one point, Buffalo Bills co-owner Terry Pegula suggested former National Football League player Anquan Boldin serve as an National Football League spokesman for social issues, noting, it couldn't be a "white owner but needs to be someone who's black".
