WaPo bombshell report reveals who paid for Trump dossier

Devin Nunes trying to destroy research firm as punishment for Trump-Russia dossier: attorney

Later - presumably after the initial Republican sponsor's campaign ended with Trump's victory in a primary - Democrats and Clinton's campaign began paying Fusion GPS to keep up its work, according to the Post.

Washington Post reporters Tom Hamburger and Rosalind S. Helderman explain the story behind a controversial dossier on President Trump.

The confirmation that the Democratic Party and the Clinton campaign contributed funding that led to the dossier comes as Trump continues to train his fire on the explosive document, most recently tweeting, "Workers of firm involved with the discredited and Fake Dossier take the 5th".

Multiple investigations have been launched into whether or not Trump or his campaign officials colluded with Russian officials to win the election.

The Clinton campaign paid Perkins Coie $5.6 million in legal fees from June 2015 to December 2016, according to campaign finance records, and the DNC paid the firm $3.6 million in "legal and compliance consulting" since November 2015 - though it's impossible to tell from the filings how much of that work was for other legal matters and how much of it related to Fusion GPS.

"It is relevant who paid for the dossier". So while both sides paid Fusion GPS, Steele was only funded by Democrats. It was not immediately known how much money Fusion received or how many others in the Clinton campaign or DNC were aware that the firm had been retained.

Friday forecast: Sunny and clear, high 77
Saturday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 10pm, then a slight chance of showers between 10pm and 1am. Very windy, with a south wind 15 to 20 miles per hour increasing to 27 to 32 miles per hour in the afternoon.

"This overly broad subpoena for Fusion's bank records serves no investigative objective and is created to punish President Trump's political foes while chilling future investigative research into his actions", attorney William W. Taylor III said. They described him as a Fusion GPS subcontractor. The spy Christopher Steele, eventually shared some of his findings with the FBI after the bureau began probing possible connections between Trump associates and the Russian government.

After the election, the FBI agreed to pay Steele to continue gathering intelligence about Trump and Russian Federation, but the bureau pulled out of the arrangement after Steele was publicly identified in news reports. It does not appear any portion of the dossier has been officially disproven.

The briefing, which was classified, was presented by four senior US intelligence chiefs, including then-FBI Director James Comey. Steele is widely respected in intelligence circles and spent time working in Moscow under diplomatic over toward the end of the Cold War.

Still, the president and his supporters have seized on the new details about the DNC-Clinton role to push their view that the various Russian Federation investigations - from Capitol Hill to Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller - are based on a fraudulent, politically inspired hit job. Fusion GPS has asked a federal judge to block a House Intelligence Committee request to gain access to the company's bank records, saying it would violate its constitutional rights. The firm's founder, Glenn Simpson, had previously given a 10-hour interview to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Fusion GPS has been fighting the release of its bank records.

They also issued a statement Tuesday morning, ahead of a news conference by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), accusing the committee chair of acting unethically.
