Employees injured in attempted prison break in Pasquotank Co.

Two prison employees were killed and several were others injured in an incident Thursday afternoon at Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City, prison officials said.

After the fire was set, several inmates unsuccessfully attempted to escape, reports CBS affiliate WTKR.

The Department identified the two employees who died as Correctional Officer Justin Smith, 35, and Correction Enterprises Manager Veronica Darden, 50.

"Members of the Prison Emergency Response Team have responded to Pasquotank CI from other state prison facilities and are assisting the local prison staff".

The prison houses about 730 adult, male felons in both high-security and minimum-custody buildings.

The Pasquotank County Sheriff's Department and the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating the incident.

Multiple people were injured and schools were placed on lockdown after an attempted escape at the Pasquotank Correctional Institution. "Three counts conducted have confirmed no missing inmates", the department said on Twitter.

Public Safety Secretary Erik A. Hooks released a statement Thursday that said in part "Our deepest sympathies go out to the families and co-workers of the employees who lost their lives in service to the State". Several employees were injured, according to the tweet.

A spokesperson from the Sentara Albemarle Medical Center told WAVY the hospital has taken in six patients, but did not specify if they were all prison employees.

Northside Elementary, Elizabeth City Middle School and Pasquotank County High School were placed on lockdown, which was lifted just before 5 p.m. Buses were ordered back to their schools with any students still in transit.

After school events and athletics at all three schools were cancelled.
