Many women have declared they will boycott Twitter on Friday, in solidarity with Rose McGowan, whose account was temporarily suspended.

Canadian-born actor Anna Paquin welcomed any men who wish to show their support under the trending hash tag #WomenBoycottTwitter.

McGowan has accused Weinstein of rape, but the film producer denies any sexual assaults.

The boycott is meant to last 24 hours, and while a large number of women have declined to participate, it certainly appears as though the platform will be a little quieter today.

Today, some women are forsaking Twitter in protest of the McGowan suspension; before signing off, they've used the hashtag #WomenBoycottTwitter.

McGowan said late Wednesday that Twitter had suspended her from tweeting after the social media company said she broke its rules.

Twitter Blocks Marsha Blackburn's Pro-Life Campaign Ad
It has told Blackburn she can leave the ad up but cannot pay to promote it unless she removes the line. Yesterday afternoon, Twitter made the decision to censor a campaign ad released by Marsha Blackburn .

McGowan has since criticised other major Hollywood figures for failing to confront Weinstein, at one point tweeting: "You all knew". She was suspended from sending tweets, retweets and liking messages, though her account remained visible to users.

Chrissy Teigen is a frequent tweeter who has had a rocky relationship with social media. This happened after Rose had tweeted several times this week about Weinstein and about Ben Affleck. Non-celebrity Twitter users also tweeted about the boycott call.

"Twitter is proud to empower and support the voices on our platform, especially those that speak truth to power", the statement continues.

The company's official account also tweeted: "We stand with the fearless women and men who use Twitter to share their stories, and will work hard every day to improve our processes to protect those voices".

A spokesperson declined to comment further on Friday. "I hope to see some meaningful changes come out of it, including better tools for dealing with dogpile-style harassment".
