Saudi king says consensus with Russia on broadening relations

Saudi Arabia announced Thursday military deal in which Moscow will deliver its latest S-400 air defense system and transfer expertise to Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI).

"The leaders will consider joint steps to further develop bilateral cooperation in the trade, economic, investment and cultural-humanitarian areas", revealed the Kremlin, according to CNBC, which noted that "in addition, global issues including conflicts in the Middle East are expected to form part of the discussions between Putin and the Saudi ruler". In coming period, cooperation between two countries is expected to strengn in field of defence industry.

He said that the visit of King Salman will give a great impetus to the common relations.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the two leaders had a "friendly and substantial discussion based on a desire by Moscow and Riyadh to consistently grow mutually beneficial partnerships in all spheres".

Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia announce large investment agreements and joint ventures to further cement relations.

Despite the chumminess, the two powers seemed to agree to disagree on one geopolitical issue: Syria.

"I think the arms deal with Saudi Arabia could be very important because this will open new strategic opportunities in the relations between Saudi Arabia and Russian Federation".

"This partnership between Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia has catalyzed cooperation of an unprecedented coalition of 24 countries (OPEC and non-OPEC)".

For his part, Jubeir said that "we believe that new horizons have opened up for the development of our relations that we could not previously have imagined".

Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia on Thursday also announced major investments and joint ventures to further cement relations, with Putin and Salman signing deals from arms sales to cooperation in space. In 2015 the countries' sovereign wealth funds agreed to $10 billion in investments.

Saudi-U.S. ties were strained under the Obama administration over its backing of a nuclear agreement with Iran and its handling of the Syrian conflict.

But the United States, for which Saudi Arabia is an important strategic ally and trading partner in the Middle East, is likely to notice Russia's newfound friendship with Saudi Arabia.

Salman arrived in Moscow on Wednesday, and it was the first time a Saudi king has ever visited Moscow.

Russian Federation may agree to extend the oil-supply agreement until the end of 2018, Putin said Wednesday, although he'll wait to make a decision nearer the expiry of the existing pact in March. Relations improved under the Trump administration, but Washington's focus in Syria continues to be on fighting the Islamic State group, not on ousting Assad.

Peskov said the cooperation between Moscow and Riyadh was in the interest of both countries and also of the world's stability.
