Barca offer to mediate in Spain-Catalonia conflict

Barcelona vs Las Palmas

Spain's constitutional court has suspended a Catalan parliament session planned for Monday in an attempt to block an expected declaration of independence by the Catalan president, Carles Puigdemont.

In a sign of the extraordinary tensions engulfing Spain, the head of the Catalan police, Josep Lluís Trapero, was summoned to appear Friday before high court Judge Carmen Lamela in Madrid on charges of sedition in connection with the referendum.

"The Catalan government's political confrontation with Spain's central government has escalated following a referendum in Catalonia on October 1 on the region's independence", the statement said.

But the opposition socialist bloc in the regional parliament had called for Monday's session to be blocked.

Like the SNP, Plaid Cymru wants independence from the United Kingdom and party leader Leanne Wood has condemned Madrid's "threats and repression" against the Catalan people.

Organisers of Sunday's vote put the turnout at 42 percent with 2.2 million people taking part.

Around 900 people were injured in clashes between police and voters on Sunday, after the government enforced the constitutional court's decision that the organisation of the referendum was illegal.

According to the Catalan government, 90% of participants voted for independence.

Titans Workout Weeden, Barkley, McGloin, Yates
Mularkey says a final decision on whether Mariota plays when Tennessee visits Miami (1-2) could come just before the game Sunday. Mariota suffered the hamstring injury on his second-quarter touchdown run in the Titans' 57-14 loss to the Texans on Sunday.

It was limited to discussion about "the rule of law and fundamental rights in Spain in light of the events in Catalonia" after an intervention by the European People Party, the largest political group, which includes Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's Popular Party.

The Catalan government is now to decide how and when exactly the declaration of independence could be made.

The government of Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy - who called the vote a "mockery" and whose position has been supported by the Spanish king as well as other European Union leaders - has so far expressed little desire to involve a third-party negotiator. This spurred more Catalonians to vote for independence.

With Spain's worst constitutional crisis in decades deepening, for the King to comment directly on a political event in or outside the country is nearly unprecedented.

Spain's biggest stock index, the Ibex 35, suffering its biggest daily loss on Wednesday since last year's Brexit referendum vote.

Spain - and especially Catalonia - have been wracked by protests over the crisis.

Spain's Constitutional Court justified the ban by calling the move to declare independence "a breach of the constitution", as have other Spanish government officials including King Felipe VI. Catalonia has its own language and culture and has its own government.

"This moment calls for mediation", he said in a televised statement late Wednesday.
