Catalonia to Declare Independence in 'Matter of Days'

More than 800 people required medical attention after riot police cracked down on the banned independence referendum regional authorities said

Puigdemont said Catalonia did not want a "traumatic break" with Madrid.

"A real friend to Spain and I count Scotland as a friend to Spain I think should say that that kind of behaviour doesn't do the reputation of Spain any good".

"There's no going back now... the days to come will be complicated, but we have to resist", David Peña, an activist in Catalonia, said.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy called the vote a "mockery" of democracy, and the European Commission expressed support for Madrid's position before the referendum.

The European Parliament will hold a special debate on Wednesday on the issue.

The move will nearly certainly be blocked by the Spanish government, which now has the option of suspending Catalonia's regional autonomy.

But he said that Spain "will overcome hard times".

"The reports and images of clashes, violence and injuries are of concern".

Mr Erdogan said on Saturday that Iraqi Kurdistan "will pay a price" for the "unacceptable" referendum. He will also meet with Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during his trip to Tehran .

More than 800 people were injured after Spanish police stormed polling stations and tried to forcibly prevent people from voting, firing tear gas and physically attacking prospective voters.

Schools and some businesses also shut in a dramatic protest bound to further ratchet up fever-pitch tensions with Spain's central government, as Madrid comes under growing worldwide pressure to resolve its worst political crisis in decades.

Puigdemont said the vote was valid and binding, and that "we have to apply it".

While the Socialist leader urged Mr Rajoy to hold talks with the Catalan president immediately, Mr Rivera said Spain should invoke article 155 of the constitution, in effect suspending Catalonia's autonomous powers. "Police responses must at all times be proportionate and necessary".

"The unjustified use of violence, which is both irrational and irresponsible, by the Spanish state will not stop the will of the Catalan people", he told reporters, accusing police of using "batons, rubber bullets and indiscriminate force" against people demonstrating "peacefully".

Spain's reaction: The Spanish government did not recognize the move, calling it illegal, according to The Telegraph.
