Twitter Expands its Character Limit on Tweets to 280

Twitter to test longer tweets to drive engagement

Twitter has begun testing doubling the character limit of tweets with some users.

It's not clear exactly how small this group of people will be.

Twitter is known for allowing users to post short status updates with bite-sized pieces of information. "Proud of how thoughtful the team has been in solving a real problem people have when trying to tweet", Twitter chief executive officer Jack Dorsey tweeted.

In a blog post Tuesday, Product Manager Aliza Rosen and Senior Software Engineer Ikuhiro Ihara explained the current limit was especially for people who wrote in English, Spanish, French, or other similar languages. However if you're wondering why doesn't Twitter just expand the character limit instead of finding such workarounds, you'll be pleased to learn that is exactly what is happening.

Russia's Putin departs for Turkey
The two leaders held face-to-face talks late Thursday at the presidential compound in Ankara . One of the main topics of the talks will be the situation in Syria .

The social media platform, famous for its 140 character limit, announced on Wednesday it will test a 280-character limit for tweets.

The 140-character limit was originally established to reflect the length of SMS messages, which was how tweets were sent prior to the invention of mobile messaging apps.

"Twitter plans to increase the limit to #280characters since it's hard for Trump to make a declaration of war with only 140 characters", comedy writer Nick Jack Pappas wrote. Some worry that the new limit could take away from Twitter's appeal, which is in its brevity.

"We're hoping fewer tweets run into the character limit, which should make it easier for everyone to tweet", the company wrote. Tweets get right to the point with the information or thoughts that matter. But Twitter seemingly believes that users are not only craving more room to express themselves, but that they also want more content in their timelines.
