Target to raise minimum wage to $11, plans $15 by 2020

TGT announced that it will be upping its minimum hourly wage over the next few years, increasing it to $11 starting next month and committing to $15 by the end of 2020.

The change, company officials said, will help it recruit and retain staff. Target competitor Walmart, the country's largest retail chain, raised its minimum pay to $10 past year, with the average pay for an hourly employee reaching $13.38 for full-time workers and $10.58 for part-time workers.

The increase will apply to the 100,000 seasonal employees it's hiring for the holidays, but the company declined to say how many of its 323,000 regular employees would see a lift.

"We're investing to make sure that we recruit and retain the existing team, that we attract new team members and, importantly, that we provide an exceptional service environment", he told reporters.

"Target has always offered market competitive wages to our team members", said Brian Cornell, CEO and chairman of Target. Activists in Cleveland recently pushed for the city to raise its minimum wage to $15, an effort which then became an issue in the mayor's race.

Merkel wins fourth term as German far-right party makes gains
Gauland has called for Germans to shed their guilt over two world wars and the Holocaust and to take pride in their veterans. The SPD said its catastrophic result would lead it to seek a stint in opposition to rekindle its fighting spirit.

Target's latest announcement contrasts with how it responded in recent years to Wal-Mart's wage hikes.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. Minnesota's minimum wage is $9.50 an hour.

"This is just one more step in being really definitive about the investments we're making in our team and the important role they play store by store in serving our guests. and we think we're moving in a very important direction as we get ready for the holiday season".

The $11 wage is higher than the minimum wage in 48 states, and it matches amounts in MA and Washington, Target says. Should other retailers do the same?

The controversial House Bill 2, repealed last spring, explicitly forbade local governments from setting their own minimum wages.
