But she offered no solutions to what the United Nations calls "ethnic cleansing" in Rakhine state, where army-led operations have burned Muslim Rohingya from their homes, and refused to point the finger at the men in uniform.

The mob threw petrol bombs at the boat and arrests were made, officials said.

Buddhists in Rakhine have accused worldwide aid groups of favoring Rohingya.

The latest exodus began after Rohingya militants attacked police posts there on August 25 and triggered a fierce military backlash.

Almost 400,000 Rohingya refugees have fled into Bangladesh since late August during the outbreak of violence in the Rakhine state as recent satellite images released by Amnesty International provided evidence that security forces were trying to push the minority Muslim group out of the country.

Asserting that the presence of Rohingya in India would be a drain on the resources of the country and would affect the rights of the people, the Centre on Monday pointed out that some of the Rohingya had contacts with terror outfits in the neighbouring country.

The government noted that Riyadh had offered the Rakhine state's Muslims a $50-million aid and had hosted them on its land since the year 1948.

He said Bangladesh has allowed the Rohingya people to seek temporary shelter and provided them humanitarian support, adding that the influx of refugees is faster than the government is able to set up camps. The spokeswoman said Facebook was aware that Rohingya activists were using the site to draw attention to the violence, and that it meant to allow non-graphic content to remain online.

The boat remains in Sittwe.

"The Rohingya refugees have started occupying all available spaces, including public spaces such as railway stations, public grounds and markets". Those who died were workers helping to distribute supplies, reports said.

The crisis has drawn global condemnation and calls from the United Nations and U.S. President Donald Trump for the military to stop the violence and support diplomatic efforts for a long-term solution for the Rohingya.

The announcement of a United States aid package comes just one day after Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi finally broke her silence on the Rohingya refugee crisis in a speech that drew widespread criticism.

"Provide security for them", she said on Tuesday at a reception by her Awami League's U.S. unit in NY where she is attending the UN General Assembly.

During the 30-minute address, Suu Kyi did not touch upon the allegations but said security forces "have been instructed to adhere strictly to the code of conduct in carrying out security operations, exercise all due restraint and to take full measures to avoid collateral damage and the harming of innocent civilians".
