Aung San Suu Kyi: 'Myanmar does not fear scrutiny'

Rohingya Muslim refugees protect themselves from rain in Balukhali refugee camp in Bangladesh

Britain, France and Australia have urged Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi to push for an end to military violence against Rohingya Muslims, while her national security adviser said those who had fled could return but the process had to be discussed.

There have been widespread calls to revoke Suu Kyi's Nobel Prize amid violence in the Rakhine and her failure to publicly defend the rights of Rohingya.

"There has been a call for the repatriation of refugees who have fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh", she said.

In her first address to the nation after the communal violence erupted in August, She said: "We condemn all human rights violations and unlawful violence".

More than 400,000 members of Myanmar's Rohingya minority have fled fighting in Rakhine state, amid what rights activists and some world leaders have alleged is a military-led campaign of "ethnic cleansing".

Myanmar is ready to verify refugees status "at any time" to aid return, says Suu Kyi. The army, which has been accused of ethnic cleansing by the United Nations, said it was flushing out insurgents.

On behalf of the government, Suu Kyi said the Myanmar authorities are set to restore security and order in Rakhine state.

On Sunday, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres had said that Suu Kyi had one "last chance" to stop the army offensive in Myanmar.

Government to open museums to honour tribal freedom fighters: Narendra Modi
After inaugurating the dam, he will also visit Sadhu Bet to take stock of the work on the "Statue of Unity" project. Mr Modi said, Sardar Sarovar Dam faced so many obstacles, but they were determined that the project will go on.

There is little that Ms Suu Kyi can directly do.

"On Aug 25, 30 police outposts were attacked; consequently govt declared Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army a terrorist group", the state counsellor said, describing the latest cause of the mass exodus.

"We feel deeply for the suffering of all the people caught up in the conflict". We want to find out why the exodus is happening.

However, Suu Kyi also claimed that Myanmar does not fear global scrutiny.

Suu Kyi said that her government was open to take action "against all people, regardless of their religion, race or political position" and insisted that "Myanmar has never been soft on human rights". As you may be aware, there are a group of countries who as of previous year were selling arms to Myanmar, and the reason we are doing this is because of past history.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop told Reuters she wanted to hear Suu Kyi offer a solution "to what is a tragedy of enormous proportions".

Rohingya refugees, rights groups and the United Nations have accused the military and Buddhist mobs of using bullets and arson to drive out the Rohingya in a systematic ethnic cleansing campaign.

"We are thankful... [and] we encourage the Government to provide this and any further assistance it can to ensure that those fleeing this tragic situation have access to food, shelter and security for as long as is necessary", said Mr McMillan of the announcement.
