The Rohingya refugees, a persecuted community of Muslims from Myanmar have fled the country in large numbers. According to unofficial estimates, there are almost 40,000 Rohingyas in India, largely located in Jammu, Hyderabad, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wants Rohingya refugees helped "regardless of politics".

According to the draft affidavit, the Centre had asked asked the apex court to refrain from interfering on the policy decision to deport Rohingyas.

It also said that India has ratified and is a signatory to various conventions that recognise the Principle of "Non- Refoulement', which prohibits deportation of refugees to a country where they may face threat to their lives". "Therefore, it is essential to identify them and keep a watch on their activities for preventing any untoward incident that can take place".

Myanmar's Army launched a crackdown in response to attacks by Rohingya militants on August 25.
