Acting Legend Harry Dean Stanton Dead At 91

APNewsBreak: Man burned by caustic beer gets $750K

Harry Dean Stanton, an iconic American character actor known for his roles in "Godfather II", "Alien", "Pretty In Pink" and many more, sadly passed away Friday afternoon.

Harry Dean Stanton passed away on Friday, September 15 at the Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles, of "natural death", said his agent to the site People.

"In the end, you end up accepting everything in your life - suffering, horror, love, loss, hate - all of it".

1971 saw Stanton in a short but unforgettable role in Two-Lane Blacktop (1971), as gay hitchhiker who places his hand on Warren Oates' character's knee.

But he didn't play a leading man until he was 54, when he was cast by Wim Wenders in 1984's critically acclaimed Paris, Texas.

In career spanning 60 years, Stanton did not often take the lead, but had a way of stamping his presence on a movie, through a quirky look or line of dialogue that became associated with the film.

Screenwriter Sam Shepard, had met Harry Dean Stanton in a bar in Santa Fe, New Mexico. "He's got a patch over one eye and a derby hat", Stanton, in a 2008 interview with Esquire, recalled Nicholson pitching him. But more general audiences will probably recognize Stanton from a brief part where he interacts with Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner in The Avengers in 2012. Following high school, Stanton served in the Navy as a cook on an ammunitions ship in the Pacific during World War II - he was in the Battle of Okinawa - then enrolled at the University of Kentucky to study journalism and radio arts.

Stanton had his first television role in 1954 and his first film role two years later.

Stanton would encounter breakthrough mainstream success in 1984's Paris, Texas playing a amnesiac named Travis who tries to connect with his brother, played by Dean Stockwell.

His first movie roles came in the mid-1950s: an uncredited part in "The Wrong Man" and turns in "Tomahawk Trail" and "The Proud Rebel" as Dean Stanton. He was also an accomplished musician, performing regularly with The Harry Dean Stanton Band.

In his down time, Stanton played poker with John Huston (Anjelica's father) and golfed with his friend Jack Nicholson, with whom he lived for a period in a Laurel Canyon house in the '60s. I told him I wanted to play something of some beauty or sensitivity.

Stanton's final role, "Lucky", was directed by John Carroll Lynch in his directorial debut.

He never married but enjoyed a long relationship with actress Rebecca De Mornay, who was 35 years his junior.
