"As the security forces tightened the cordon, the hiding militants opened fire, triggering an encounter", an official said.

DGP Kashmir SP Vaid said the J&K Police was after Ismail since Amarnath attack took place.

Ismail was the mastermind of the 10 July attack on a bus carrying Amarnath yatra pilgrims in south Kashmir's Anantnag district.

"LeT chief commander Abu Ismail along with his accomplice were today killed in brief gunfight here", a police spokesman told Xinhua.

"Since the attack on the yatra on July 10, these killers have been our targets".

He said Ismail was directly involved in killing of 14 security personnel and 8 civilians and injuring other people.
