Russian military bombards ISIS targets in Syria

Islamic State convoy

Since 2015, much to the West's dislike, Russian Federation has provided military backing for Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces.

American-backed Syrian Democratic Forces are also fighting near the city, advancing from the north bank of the Euphrates river, while Assad's forces move in from the south.

Having lost its last stronghold of Mosul in Iraq earlier this year, ISIS now faces being wiped off the map in Syria as Russian-backed government forces push to take Deir Ezzor in the east, while the US-backed SDF advances into their "capital" of Raqqa.

They said that while the militants still control rural areas outside the city and the border with Iraq, they are now encircled by Syrian troops from three sides, with their backs to the Euphrates River. "The targets were 500 kilometers to 670 kilometers away".

A convoy of Islamic State militants and their relatives being evacuated from the border with Lebanon has crossed into an extremist stronghold in eastern Syria, a Syrian monitoring group said Thursday, ending a standoff with the USA -led coalition.

The U.S-led coalition struck the road the convoy was traveling on, leaving it stranded in the desert for about two weeks, though some vehicles were able to slip into militant-held territory.

The Syrian army and Hezbollah, a Shia Lebanese group, had prepared to transport the 17-bus IS convoy containing about 300 fighters and their families to an unspecified area in eastern Syria believed to be near Deir al-Zor. Last week, the U.S-led coalition said it ended surveillance of the convoy after a Russian request.
