5 dead at nursing home after Irma cuts power

Crews were called to the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills on Wednesday morning after residents woke up sick, the Miami Herald reported.

Not counting the nursing home deaths, at least 15 people in Florida have died under Irma-related circumstances, and six more in SC and Georgia, many of them well after the storm had passed.

"Although the details of these reported deaths are still under investigation, this situation is unfathomable".

Like clockwork, stories of suffering by the oldest residents in the line of hurricanes, floods, tornadoes and other natural disasters seem to follow.

"They identified which facilities were to be critical top infrastructure facilities, this was not one of them", he said about the Hollywood Hills center. Sharief explained that the causes of death was not immediately clear.

Sixty-one nursing homes had been evacuated as of Tuesday afternoon, Knapp said. Multiple stretchers are also on site.

The hospital has set up a hotline, 954-265-3000, so that families of nursing home residents can check to see if their loved ones have been taken there. Today, five nursing home patients in Hollywood succumbed to the Florida heat and died early this morning. The fuse needed to maintain the air-conditioning unit was broken as Hurricane Irma passed through the area.

At a news conference, Florida Power and Light said it serviced portions of the facility.

"There's nothing we can do", employee Dave Long told WLPG-TV. 'We've been calling and calling.

"We're doing everything we can to help them get either generators, fuel, power back on".

The 152-bed rehabilitation center was fined $5,500 on February 18, 2016, according to a Medicare website.

Hollywood Police Chief Tom Sanchez said investigators believe the deaths at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills were heat-related.

Timothy Keefe, deputy chief of the Broward County Fire-Rescue, said his department is helping the city of Hollywood, on the east coast of the state, evacuate the entire facility.

One of the main highways that connects Florida to the rest of the country is in danger of being closed due to flooding caused by Hurricane Irma.

Florida Sen. Bill Nelson called the six deaths in Hollywood "an inexcusable tragedy" and called on authorities to get to the bottom of it.

Michel was accused of receiving kickbacks for patient admissions in a Larkin fraud scheme and conspired to admit patients to the hospital for medically unnecessary treatment. Facility administration is cooperating fully with relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances that led to this unfortunate and tragic outcome.

At the Coral Gables building that was evacuated, five firefighters went up the dark emergency stairwell, strapped Ofelia Carrillo - a frail 97-year-old woman who is immobile and has heart problems - to a special evacuation chair and carried her down.
