Google appeals against 2.4-billion euro fine in EU court

Brussels accused Google of giving its own service too much priority in search results at the expense of other price comparison services, such as TripAdvisor and Expedia.

The regulator ordered the company to stop the practice by September. 28.

The company has submitted plans on how it plans to stop favouring its shopping service and these are now being reviewed by Brussels.

The regulator issued the fine as they said Google abused their power as they had placed their own shopping comparison service at the top of the Google results page.

Google said declined to comment further.

It took Intel the best part of eight years to obtain Wednesday's judgement, and the case isn't over yet, so Google is likely have a long legal battle ahead of it.

The EU Court of Justice told a lower tribunal last Wednesday to re-examine U.S. chipmaker Intel's appeal against a 1.06 billion euro fine, dealing a rare setback to the Commission. A court spokeswoman said Google has not asked for an interim order to suspend the decision to levy an fine.

So even if Google makes tweaks to the operation of Google Shopping in the short term, i.e.to avoid the risk of additional sanctions for non-compliance, years of uncertainty are being added to an antitrust investigation that has already clocked up more than six years of probes by European Union regulators.

The EU is also expected to soon decide another case against Google over abuse of its dominance of internet search to impose its Android mobile operating system.
