Irma Knocks Out Power to More Than 1.6 Million Customers in Florida

Hurricane Irma is expected to hit Florida as a powerful Category 4 on Sunday.

The good news in South Florida is that recovery from power outages caused by Hurricane Irma is now expected to be a fix job, FPL spokesman Rob Gould said Saturday at a mid-day news conference.

FPL said it had shut down one of Turkey Point's two nuclear reactors.

FPL, the biggest power company in Florida, said on its website that more than 1,306,000 customers were without power.

As of 10 p.m., there were 118,608 outages in Miami-Dade, 64,270 in Broward, and 10,879 in Palm Beach County. This could take weeks or longer "if Irma's worst fears are realized", he said.

A series of explosions and meltdowns occurred at the Fukushima nuclear plant after a massive natural disaster unleashed a powerful tsunami that shut the facility's cooling systems and led to meltdowns.

The improvements, utility representatives said, are designed not to prevent outages wholesale, but rather limit damage so that it is easier to restore lost power more quickly.

Repairing equipment and reconnecting lines can be done more quickly than rebuilding the electric grid, which FPL warned on Friday could be the case in the tri-county region.

For many, it will now be a waiting game because FPL crews can't work to restore power once winds reach 35 miles per hour or higher.

FPL's nuclear plants are protected by thick concrete and reinforced steel and like many plants around the world were bolstered further after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, Gould said. At midafternoon local time, they reported only scattered outages.
